WHAT MAKES A GREAT HEADSHOT?
A great headshot needs to be professional and look like YOU!When investing in your headshot, we strongly recommend working with an experienced industry photographer. Importance should be placed on wardrobe and hair.
👉🏼 HEADSHOT #1👉🏼 HEADSHOT #2
Some things to consider when preparing for your headshot session—
Hair should be styled natural and how you wear it most days.
Makeup is acceptable for ages 16 and older but it should be fresh and natural (no heavy eye shadows/liners, false lashes, or dark lipsticks, etc.)
If you are under 16, face should be clean with NO makeup.
Wardrobe should enhance your appearance, not distract or overpower. Choose solid colors, in jewel tones, no busy stripes or patterns, no ruffles or other ornamental necklines, no logos, no crop tops, no hair accessories, no jewelry.
📍TIP! Get plenty of rest the night before!
There are 2 primary headshots that actors need—Commercial and Theatrical (also known as Legit). Below is an overview of both.
COMMERCIAL HEADSHOT
A good commercial headshot has high energy and big smiles. The lighting is bright, hair is natural, makeup is fresh, and wardrobe is casual. These headshots are perfect for commercial and lifestyle print castings/submissions.
THEATRICAL (LEGIT) HEADSHOT
A theatrical headshot is generally more dramatic in contrast to your commercial headshot, with a subtle but noticeable difference in lighting, hair/makeup, and wardrobe. Your energy is more contained and your smile is softer. These headshots are ideal for TV, film, and theatrical castings/submissions.
ARCHETYPE HEADSHOTS
Archetype headshots are entirely optional. For actors interested in exploring this further, please google for additional info.
PRINTINGProfessional headshots are printed 8" x 10" in size with your first and last name on the front. It is optional to have a white border or "bleed" over the edge. These are personal choices you or the printer can make.
CASTINGSWhen attending an in-person casting, your resume should always be stapled to the back of your headshot, face up, and cut to the same size—8" x 10" (with no paper overhang).
HEADSHOT #2
Below is a theatrical headshot with a horizontal set-up, also known as landscape, and a white border. First and last name on front.
The same headshot but with a vertical set-up and white border.
The same headshot with a horizontal set-up, bleeding over the edge (no white border).

DO I NEED A BEAUTY SHOT?
Beauty shots, also known as glamour shots, tend to be more flattering and captivating than headshots and are ideal for model comp cards and portfolios. Beauty shots require a photographer who is skilled in lighting and does not use camera filters or heavy photo editing. Focus is on the model's facial attributes such as eyes, lips, complexions, and hair, etc.📍TIP! Beauty shots are most suitable for models over 18 only.

DO I NEED A PORTFOLIO?
If you are interested in a career as a fashion or commercial print model, you will need a portfolio with at least three or more professional full-length photos to get started, as well as a headshot or beauty shot. The purpose of your portfolio is to showcase your versatility and ability to adapt to different styles and looks. By demonstrating your range and professionalism, you encourage and inspire brands to hire you.
PORTFOLIO BOOK
(For fashion models only, ages 16+)
When attending an open call, agency interview or in-person casting, you MUST have a traditional binder-style portfolio book or iPad portfolio with up to 10 of your best photos.Your book should ONLY include photos taken by a professional photographer or a ”testing” photographer, as well as copies of any print work you may have done (known as tear sheets).📍 TIP! Do not include more than 10 photos in your portfolio book. Never include digitals, selfies or snapshots. Never use your cell phone as a portfolio book. You MUST have a binder-style book or iPad.⭐ IMPORTANT!
Portfolio Books are required of fashion models only, ages 16+.
ONLINE PORTFOLIO
(All model types and ages)
An online portfolio, such as a personal website, a file-sharing platform like DropBox or Google Drive, or a casting profile on sites like Backstage or Casting Networks, is an excellent way to keep and share all photos you have taken. You can easily send these images to your agent and other industry professionals you meet!
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR IN MY PHOTOS?
KIDS & TEENS
For kids and teens, we recommend wearing casual, athletic, trendy and back-to-school styles.📍TIP Please keep wardrobe age appropriate. Avoid wearing too many accessories and anything overly editorial or formal. Please NO makeup. NO logos. Absolutely NO sunglasses!
MEN & WOMEN
For men and women, we recommend any wardrobe looks that are suitable for your type and age range. Keywords when choosing outfits are—simple, fashionable, approachable, stylish, trendy, lifestyle, athletic, leisure, and business.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I UPDATE MY PORTFOLIO?
Babies and Toddlers do not need professional photos or portfolios. Regular snapshots are fine. For children over the age of 5, if you are actively pursuing your career, we suggest having at least one professional photo shoot every year to keep your photos updated and your portfolio current. As you get older, it is not as important to update your photos as frequently, unless there is a noticeable shift in your appearance, or you are transitioning from your 20s to 30s, 40s to 50s, etc.📍 TIP! For ALL models, we recommend taking selfies and snapshots regularly to supplement your online portfolio or have handy if requested. These photos can be helpful to agents, casting directors and brands who are looking for natural, non-professional images that can validate your appearance. Often times, a simple snapshot will result in getting you booked!
